How to request a copy of a federal tax return from the IRS

You have other options for getting printed copies of your federal tax return information:

Tax Return Transcripts. Shows most of the line items from your tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as it was originally filed, including any accompanying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes made after the return was filed. In many cases, a return transcript will meet the requirements of lending institutions such as those offering mortgages and for applying for student loans.

Tax Account Transcripts. Shows any later adjustments either made after the tax return was filed such as your basic personal data, including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.

Tax Return Copies. An exact copy of a tax return you previously filed plus all attachments (including Form W-2). You will be charged a $39 fee for each tax year requested. Copies are generally available for returns filed in the current tax year and for the past 6 tax years.

You can request transcripts or copies of your tax return by calling the IRS directly (800) 829-1040. You can also order transcripts by mail by downloading and printing:
